Amy DuBois Barnett – who formerly worked for Honey magazine — was the first black woman to head up a major mainstream magazine when she left Honey and become editor-in-chief for Teen People.
Having written highly personal columns for Honey, and developing a legion of fans there, Amy DuBois Barnett realized there was a hunger — especially from young black women — to have mentors showing them how to navigate life’s ropes.
That life raft of sorts appeared with DuBois Barnett’s Get Yours!, a tome letting young African-American and other women in on how she made it over.
