La Times Says They’re Sorry for Relying on Falsified Court Documents in P Diddy / Tupac Article

First, the Los Angeles Times wrote this piece about “Tupac Shakur and the start of a rap war,” which claimed Sean “P Diddy No Longer Puff Daddy” Combs had something to do with Tupac’s murder.

Then, The Smoking Gun called the LA Times’ source a bit fat liar.

Now, the Los Angeles Times has apologized for the P Diddy/Tupac story, saying that the Pulitzer Prize-winning writer of the original piece — Chuck Philips — believed in the authenticity of the documents because they’d been filed in court.

P Diddy’s folks are threatening law suits, and while I applaud The Smoking Gun for their excellent research, I’m also siding with journalist Chuck Philips on this one.

Documents filed in court are a valid source of investigative reporting — but I guess Chuck should’ve followed his gut when he knew something didn’t feel right about the story.
